The Rigby Trojans Junior Varsity team won Tuesday night’s basketball game against the Madison Bobcats 49-32. This gave the Trojans a conference win, which will affect them for seeding in the district tournament. Starting for the Trojans was Mady Boyce, Abbie Scott, Maylee Nordstrom, Sydney Berrett, and Malynn Munk. Starting for the Bobcats were Salisha Abeyta, Nora Waddoups, Rylei Meredith, Maggie Anderson, and Emily Stoeber. The top scorer of the night was Tiade Togiai, of Rigby with 5 layups. At the end of the first quarter, Madison trailed 15-6. They still trailed at the end of the second quarter, 28-12, and trailed through the rest of the game, with quarter 3 ending 34-21 and the game ending 49-32. Mady Boyce of Rigby had the excitement of the night with two corner hook shots, both of which were successful.

The Bobcats had the first basket of the night from Rylei Meredith. Rigby retaliated with a hook shot by Mady Boyce. Rigby started out in a press whenever the ball was taken out under the hoop and continued that strategy throughout the whole game.

“Every single time we ran our press break the right way, we beat their press,” Madison JV head coach Kaitlyn Krainock said after the game.

Madison followed suit and also had a press that they used off and on during the game. Madison also continued into a zone defense, where they seemed to find the most success. They switched back and forth between man and zone throughout the game, while Rigby stayed mostly in man defense.

“I think we just work really well as a team in zone and move well together,” Krainock said.

The Bobcats lost their game last week against the Thunder Ridge Titans, also a conference game.

“My ladies are coming back from a big loss last week, and we’ve definitely improved on some things,” Krainock said. “We came out strong, faltered a little under the pressure…but honestly I think we came out the second quarter and battled it out as best we could.”

If it’s one thing these girls showed tonight, it’s how to never give up.

“I think these kids don’t give up, and that’s a huge thing we have,” Krainock said. “Rival game against a really good school, I’m not disappointed in my kids. We just have things to work on.”
