Thanksgiving Traditions
Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated all over the world and many people that celebrate it sometimes have interesting traditions. At Madison High School, there are a several students that have families that go all out for Thanksgiving.
Marley McNair, a Junior at Madison Highschool, is one of these students. Her family goes all out for every holiday.
“We do a lot of things, we have a game night everynight for Thanksgiving but we make up our own games, like we have family trivia on how many hours each family member spends on their phone, and we have bingo with literal hundred dollar gift baskets of insane prizes. We have a raffle and we all get fake money that we use to bid on prizes that each family brings.”
While McNair’s family has a lot of traditions for Thanksgiving she has a favorite.
“Mine is bingo, we normally do family bingo. I just think it’s really fun, I feel like an old person when I play it, but I just love winning and I love anything competitive.”
Many people have family gatherings for Thanksgiving. They can be big gatherings or small gatherings.
“60 probably, it depends on the year though, because sometimes it’s just my grandparents and their kids. But sometimes we do my grandparents and their siblings and all of the relatives. So the most we normally have is 60, but on average it’s probably just 40.”
Sometimes families travel for Thanksgiving whether it be to a different state or city.
“When I lived in Colorado one time we came and visited here. But we don’t normally go to any weird locations, we stay in Rexburg.”
McNair hasn’t really had any crazy foods for Thanksgiving but she does have an absolute favorite.
“We normally do rainbow jello its our tradition and its every flavor of jello. I don’t like pie so thats why I like the jello.”
Another one of these students is Ethan Andreasen, a Senior at Madison High School.
“I haven’t done anything super crazy for Thanksgiving, but one big thing our family does is eat a lot of pie. Last year I think we had 16 pies for 15 people, so that’s a lot more than most people have.”
Andreasen’s family doesn’t do many physical traditions for Thanksgiving.
“We don’t do many physical traditions for Thanksgiving, but each one of us always gets to pick a pie, and then sometimes we’ll meet with grandparents and cousins and stuff and eat a big lunch with them and hang out.”
While not many families have crazy Thanksgiving traditions, almost every family has a tradition whether they know it or not.
