DYW: Postponed or Cancelled?

All school, social, and sport activities have been postponed or all together cancelled due to the CoronaVirus; the Distinguished Young Women (DYW) is no exception.

“We’ve had to put everything on hold… We were supposed to have our program in April, but now we can’t do anything until May… It’s kind of depressing, but I know it’s for the better,” Junior, Grace Dabell said.

There is speculation of complete cancellation of the DYW program, but participant Debell had a different opinion.

“Cancellation I don’t think is an option, because we’ve all been working so hard and it’s a national program… If you become the representative from Madison then you go to state. If you become the representative for Idaho you go to nationals.. It’s really hard to just cancel everything,” Dabell said.

With cancellation a low possibility, what are the girls doing to prepare for their upcoming performance?

“We have already been instructed to practice on our own. I’ve been working on my talent and things like fitness… All the preparation except for group preparation is done at home. Hopefully we won’t be behind too badly,” Dabell said.

The CoronaVirus has made most activities uncertain, but even in this time of limbo the Distinguished Young Women program is still working it’s magic.

“Even though there’s the possibility that I might not be able to perform, participate and compete in the program, I’ve still learned a whole lot of how I can become a better person and add more value to society,” Dabell said.
