More Than A Con: The Illusion in Catch Me If You Can

By: Lauren Orr

Catch Me If You Can is a movie that grabs your attention right away and keeps it the whole time. It is based on a true story and follows Frank Abagnale Jr., a teenager who runs away from home and starts pretending to be different people. Before he even turns 21, he acts as a pilot, a doctor, and a lawyer. The movie is exciting because of the clever scams and the constant chase, but it is also emotional. Even when Frank is running from the FBI, you can tell there is more going on inside him.

One of the main themes in the movie is identity. Frank is not just breaking the law to get money. He is trying to feel important and respected after his parents get divorced. His family falls apart, and he does not know how to handle it. Each new job he pretends to have is like a mask. On the outside, he seems confident and calm. On the inside, he is still a confused and lonely kid. This makes it easier for the audience to understand him, even when he makes bad choices.

Another important theme is family and connection. The relationship between Frank and FBI agent Carl Hanratty starts as a simple chase. Carl wants to catch him, and Frank wants to escape. But over time, their relationship becomes deeper. They talk on the phone, especially on Christmas Eve, and you can see that both of them feel alone. Carl follows the rules and believes in order. Frank runs from rules and wants freedom. Even though they are very different, they both want purpose and connection.

Overall, Catch Me If You Can is more than just a crime movie. It is about growing up and trying to figure out who you are. It shows what can happen when someone runs from their problems instead of facing them. The movie is fun and fast, but it also has a deeper message. In the end, Frank’s biggest challenge is not escaping the FBI. It is learning who he really is.
