Top of the Hill

The first time I strapped into a snowboard and looked down a snowy mountain, my heart was practically pumping out of my chest and not just from the cold. Snowboarding isn’t just a winter sport: it feels like a full-body experience that mixes speed, balance, and pure freedom into one sleek piece of gear.

Snowboarding centers around the snowboard itself, a smooth, flat board with curved tips, grippy bindings, and a textured base that glides over snow. The board feels solid under your boots but flexible enough to bend with your movements. When you lean into a turn, you can feel the board respond instantly, almost like it’s reading your mind. Paired with boots and bindings, the setup feels snug and secure, keeping your feet locked in while still allowing movement. A snowboard allows you to go down steep or non steep hills when snowy, by gliding, carving, and turning any way you want. Snowboarding also allows you to practice tricks, like backflipping. While also turning with control and style.

Snowboarding uses a lot of gravity, and lower body movement that helps to take control of the board. By using your lower body it shifts weight to where you want to go but you have to be sure to angle the board’s edges, and by doing this you can steer and slow down smoothly. How well does practicing all of this pay off? Well I would say extremely well.

Once you get the hang of it, snowboarding feels free and exciting, making even simple runs fun. The down side of it is learning can be tough and frustrating at first, with lots of falling, and gear can be expensive.

Compared to skiing, snowboarding feels more relaxed and surf-like, while skiing offers more stability for beginners. Snowboarding for me is a different kind of feeling than anything else in the world. The feeling of feeling free, and feeling at peace when you’re on a mountain, will never be something I don’t love with a passion. While this may not be for everyone I think you should give it a try!
