Recap of the Last 2020 Presidential Debate
The first 2020 presidential debate between candidates Donald Trump and Joe Biden was widely frowned upon to say the least. However, the debate that took place on October 22nd seemed to be a bit more watchable.
A few changes were made to this debate that made it more civil, and more fair. For example, everytime a candidate made their opening remarks, the opponent’s microphone was muted until time was up. (or at least there was the threat thereof) This made for less interruptions, and gave both candidates an equal playing ground when it came to getting their point across.
The debate opened with the topic of the Coronavirus pandemic, and what their plans would be to defend the American people from the virus in the future. Republican candidate Donald Trump made remarks about how the nation is “rounding the turn” on the Coronavirus and that there is a vaccine just weeks away. Democratic candidate Joe Biden rebutted his claim by saying “Come on. There’s not another serious scientist in the world who says it’s going to be over soon.” Trump said that Americans are “Learning to live with it we have no choice.” Biden respondonded saying; “He says we’re learning to live with it? People are learning to die with it.”
Another major topic of discussion during this debate was affordable healthcare. President Trump promised to protect all those with preexisting health conditions. Biden responded with saying that Trump has been promising that for four years but hasn’t acted upon it. Biden pitched an altered Affordable Care Act called ‘Bidencare’ which essentially offers affordable drugs, premiums, etc, choose private or public insurance, and give everyone coverage. Trump responded by saying he wants to terminate the ACA, and that it threatens Medicare.
Trump and Biden also discussed their views on immigration policies. The moderator brought up some 500+ children who were separated from their families at the southern border, and kept in facilities.. Trump said that these “cages” were built by the Obama administration. He continued to say that the kids are “well taken care of” and kept in safe, clean facilities. Biden was furious by the fact that the children had been separated from their families in the first place and said that it makes the United States look like a “laughing stock”.
All-in-all, a lot of ground was covered during this debate. These topics are just some of the more widely pressing matters. However, there is a lot more to look into. No matter who you side with, or what your background is, do some research, and get out to vote if you are eligible.
