Competitors Compete
In January each weekend of the month, MHS teams Wrestling, Dance, Cheer, and Debate host competitions.
During the weekend of the 26th and 27th, the debate team is hosting their invitational. The debate team is working towards practicing more and working more as a team unit. The debate team loves having individual winners but also supporting each other as a team.
This Friday, the 12th, the wrestling team kicks off the month with their meet. One thing the wrestlers are doing to prepare is a Pizza Pie Cafe dinner all week. If you go to Pizza Pie Cafe and mention you are with the MHS wrestlers until Thursday then 25% of proceeds go to the team. Student shares what the wrestlers do to prepare for this weekend with practices.
“We don’t prepare really any different, but since it’s at home we really want to do well at our home tournament so this week we are going to be really focused and work hard,” Senior Paxton Ingram said.
Not only does the wrestling team focus hard on a home win, but the dance and cheer teams are also just as determined to win their competitions. As the cheer and dance teams get ready for their big tournaments the competition is fierce. With just over 40 schools competing at both the dance and cheer competitions it will be an eventful weekend. The dance team on Friday, the 19th, is facing one of their toughest competitions of the year. Student describes how prepared and ready for the big tournament MHS dance team is.
“We are practicing a lot more so we can give each other feedback so we know what to fix and our coach films our dances so we know what to fix,” Senior Hannah Brewer said.
The cheer team on the 20th also is getting ready for their big tournament. Student shares insight on the preparations they are taking in order to do well against tight-knit competition.
“So the cheer team has been practicing every day for months, especially working on heading complicated stands for one of our teams. We are finished running all of the routines, so we are now going through the process of cleaning them up so they are ready for the judges. We also have been performing at basketball games to get practice in front of a crowd,” Senior Julianna Short said.
