The MHS girls basketball team beat Rigby 50-35 Tuesday night at Madison High School.

This game was the first game for either team, in the district tournament.

The district tournament is used to qualify teams for the state tournament.

Madison headed into the tournament with the 3rd seed and Rigby the 4th.

With the victory Madison will advance to their next game against 2nd seed Highland.

That game will be held at Highland High School Thursday, February 2nd at 7:00 p.m.

Rigby will play Hillcrest at home that same night.

The winner of the Madison and Highland game will go on to play Bonneville for their chance to go to state.

The loser of the Madison and Highland will go on to play the winner of Rigby and Hillcrest.

The State tournament will be held February, 16-18 in Nampa, Idaho.

Two teams from the district 5-6 conference will go to the state tournament.

Madison was lead by senior Ryan Tyler with 12 points, followed by senior Jasmine Delgado with 11 points, and by senior Leah Dougherty with 10 points.

Rigby was lead by sophomore Halle Livingston who had 16 points.

Throughout the first quarter neither team was able to establish a solid lead.

It wasn’t until the end of the first half that madison was able to pull ahead by 10 points.

At the start of the 1st quarter it seemed as though the two teams matched up very well as neither of the team’s shots seemed to be falling.

“We were able to establish a lead of about 10 points going into halftime which felt promising and helped us continue into the end of the game,” said Madison junior Kelsie Walker.

It seemed to be a similar story up into the 3rd quarter, however Madison was able to establish a confident 12 point lead heading into the final quarter of play.

Rigby managed to cut the lead to just 7 with about 6 minutes to go in the 4th quarter.

With about 2 minutes of play left the teams were separated by just an 8 point difference.

However Rigby began to foul and Madison excelled in free throws hitting 11 free throws in the last 2 minutes.

Rigby only managed to score 4 points in the last 2 minutes causing them to fall to Madison by 15 points.
