National Gingerbread House Day is a holiday celebrating gingerbread houses, and it is held on December 12.  Although this holiday is not well known, it’s a great idea for dates and family activities.

Sophomore Stephanie Stumpf and Junior Isaac Williams are cousins and have been building gingerbread houses as a family tradition for years.

“We always get together and celebrate holidays. We’ll celebrate Thanksgiving together and Christmas, and whatever else, and sometimes we’ll get together and make Gingerbread Houses…it’s pretty fun,” Williams said.

Everyone has different ideas on how to decorate gingerbread houses, and these two cousins are no different. Each cousin has their personal favorites as far as candy goes.

“Lots of sprinkles and then…uh, I don’t know what else. I just kind of do my thing, and I throw candy all over it. That’s what I do,” Williams said

“Anything with chocolate, I guess,” Stumpf said.

Stumpf and Williams have been building gingerbread houses for over 9 years. With their experience they have learned a few tips and tricks along the way. The family’s most important trick is to use melted white chocolate to glue the pieces together. It takes a little bit longer to build the houses, but it makes them stand up longer.

Go grab a date or gather the family together, bake up some gingerbread and start building and decorating your very own gingerbread house.
