A big discussion going around right now is whether or not video games should be considered a sport. In
my opinion, they should not be considered a sport. The definition of sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
In video games, although they have to be very smart, the player doesn’t have to be very physical
while playing, besides using their fingers. When I asked Berrett Wilson if they should be considered a
sport this is what he said, “no, there’s not enough physical activity for it to be a sport.” When you’re thinking of sports, you think of football, or basketball, where you need to use a lot of energy and run a lot to win the game. In video games, physical activity is not needed at all like it is in major sports.
Esports is growing a lot though, in 2019, nearly 100 million people watched the League of Legends tournament, and over 100 colleges have esports teams. But just because they are watched a lot
and you can get scholarships from playing them, they still should not be considered sports. If people
started considering video games to be sports, that would make a lot of young people rather play video
games than actually going outside and getting real exercise than people playing real sports.
