Racism in Sports
Throughout the world there have been a variety of athletes that have risen to the top.
Examples include, Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Usain Bolt, etc. etc. They are the best of the
best, they put in the work to become great. Others do not like this at all however, as this is
because they are not white or American. Racism in sports has been around forever, but it needs
to stop.
In 2013, an Italian football club made extremely rude racist comments to a player from
Ghana. Every time that he touched the ball a small crowd would make monkey noises, and even
more people called him an animal.
In 2020, four fans were arrested after the match between England and Bulgaria because
of their racist chants.
Referees of a different color have been especially targeted every time they send a player
off the field for some type of conduct they’ve done.
Even though a player of a different race might be better than some of the other players
on the team, they are forced and pushed to play different positions. In football, the quarterback
position is predominantly white. In tennis, white players accounted for 80% whereas black
players only accounted for 7%.
Racist comments have no place in sports. The only fault for someone of a different race
getting a spot above a white is that they worked harder. This however, is hard to fix for some
people. People are racist because they judge too easily, and take on views of people around
them.
Just because someone is of a different race does not give anyone the right to make fun
of them. Anyone can be great at what they do if they just put in the work. Michael Jordan, a
black basketball player, was the greatest of them all. Jordan was the first one to the gym, and
the last one to leave. He worked hard to become one of the best, and it was not in vain.
Some of the best athletes are of a different race, because of their hard work ethic.
Anyone can be great if they work at it, it shouldn’t matter what race you are.
