Bags of love is a charity organization that creates care packages for children in need. It is meant to give kids a sense of security and safety.

“It’s great because we donate the money so everyone should donate their coins.” Junior Mirah Bennion said.

But what is the coin drive?

“It’s a fundraiser set up by key club to raise money for a charity called bags of love with a competition.” Senior Sara Loveland said.

Although a great cause many haven’t heard of it.

“What’s a coin drive?” Nathan Edwards said.

It also seems like the lack of attention is affecting the effectiveness of the coin drive.

“No one has really heard about it. I don’t think many people have donated.” Junior Mary Palmer said.

In 2022 alone over 4,600 local children got a bag from Bags of Love. This alone shows how much this charity has done. However most students at MHS haven’t even heard about the drive. The drive is set up in a way that is also a fun competition. Each grade is given a jar and each grade gets points by getting coins in their jar. But each grade can subtract points from other grades by putting quarters in their jars.

In 2008 bags of love was founded by Di Barrong. It started as a collection childrens clothing and quilts. In 2008 they gave away 25 bags of love however they would grow quite rapidly with 4,600 kids receiving bags in 2022. Thanks to the hard work of 165 volunteers in 2022, who spent more than 28,000 hours, they were able to achieve this. Overall this charity has done a lot of good in the past 15 years and with the help of MHS students they can continue to improve the lives of children.
