Introducing Rexburg Music and me :)

Despite our collective prayers and manifestations, we’ve arrived at a new school year. Personally, I have mixed feelings about this new school year. I’m a little excited; a little nervous. But I am very happy to be back writing my silly little thoughts about silly little songs.

As it’s a new school year, I thought I would give a little introduction of myself and the local music scene to catch y’all up. I’ll tell you everything you need to know about me and my band, other local groups, and the best places to hear live music in Rexburg.

I’m in a band called Hazel Paul Band. Yes, it’s named after me. No, I didn’t name it. My drummer named it and thanks a lot to him because now I’m stuck explaining to people that I’m narcissistic, but not narcissistic ENOUGH to name a band after myself.

The four of us in Hazel Paul Band have been playing together since May and we love it. I play rhythm guitar and sing. Justin is my phenomenal lead guitarist. Bridget plays the bass for us and is just darling. Mike is my drummer and I’m convinced that he’s the best drummer who ever set stick to snare. I love these guys and the music we make. If you’d like to support us, you can check out our instagram @hazelpaulband <3.

A quick rundown of a few other local Rexburg bands:

Good Ol’ Days; my personal favorite Rexburg band. These guys are crazy talented and super nice. If you haven’t been to a Good Ol’ Days show, I highly recommend it. They’ve got a fun indie vibe. Currently, they have two singles out on Spotify (with an album on the way I think??) Definitely go check out a show!

Blame the Deacon; (previously named Furious George) is an alternative rock band. They play shows around Rexburg during the BYUI semester. They cover a lot of alternative rock/punk songs and also have original music released on Spotify.

Fishbowl; is an indie/alternative band that is a pretty popular band among college students. Their shows are entertaining and fun . If you ever get a chance to go to a show, take it! The single, “W.W.J.D.”, is out on Spotify as well as a few of their other originals.

Allyana (and her backing band); are a talented group who perform original Allyana songs with the occasional Mitski cover thrown in. They put on a great show and I highly recommend seeing a show when the BYUI semester starts up again. Also she’s the only other female vocalist in a band in Rexburg. We love to see women win!

This is not an exhaustive list, and there are more local bands worth checking out. But where to see them??? Well, lucky for us we have approximately ONE music venue located in good ol’ Rexburg, Idaho. Even luckier for us, it was voted Eastern Idaho’s Best Music Venue in 2022. The Basement is the place to be Friday and Saturday nights. With performances from bands all the way from Salt Lake to  Rexburg, The Basement has something for everyone. I highly recommend checking out a show with your friends. Admission is generally $10 and shows go from 8-10:30 pm. If you want to know more about The Basement, you should check out their instagram page @thebasementrexburg.

The Basement’s vibe is catching on. Occasionally you’ll see a show at Superlame Vintage, Porter Park, or Thrifted Lennons. You can follow these places on instagram to stay in the know.

Where do you like to go to enjoy live music? You can follow me on instagram @hazelpaulperson or my band @hazelpaulband to let me know. You can also email me at hazel.emmaline@gmail.com. Thanks for reading this far if you made it.
