September 11, 2001 at 8:45 in the morning, 18 years ago we lost nearly 3,000 people due to a terrorist attack.

“Tuesday September 11, 2001, I was at the New Mexico state fair and we had a sheep show. I was in albuquerque which is where I lived when that took place that morning,” Ag teacher Mr. Wetzel said. “When I found out the first time, when somebody came up and told me, ‘did you hear?’ I thought it was a joke.”

To this day, 9/11 still really hits people in the heart. They didn’t have to be alive or know what was going on to still know that this was a tragedy.

“The next day was absolutely crazy because they didn’t released us from the fair, we had to stay there that night. No planes flying, no one was allowed in or out of the fair grounds, it was almost like being in a prison. So that was definitely weird especially from being around so many people at the fair, the next day they let us go home to be with our families. Everywhere you went people were acting crazy or scared, and I just listened to talk radio for five hours all the way back. It was like this is a moment when people talk about Kennedy being shot or when Pearl Harbor was bombed. One of those transformable moments in Americans lives. I knew it was going to be something that changed our worlds forever,” Mr. Wetzel said.

9/11 changed so many things and so many thoughts were changed, and so many people lost so many things close to them.

“I think the biggest thing that changed was airport security. Before we used to just take a ticket hop on a plane and go. You could buy the ticket the day of and you didn’t have to do anything and now we have to go through this big long process of taking a plane.  It’s one of those things where the toughest thing to get over, is the actual event that happened. It proves without a shout of a doubt that no matter how much control we have and we think we have there is still a lot of stuff that is way out of our control. And that life is so short that if you aren’t having fun and enjoying it now then you better find some way to do that because you never know when it’s going to be gone,” Mr. wetzel said.
