Madison Loves Multi-Sport Athletes
Madison “Maddie” Jensen has been a two-sport athlete since she was 6 years old. These days she plays softball and basketball on the Madison High School teams. She is a utility player on both teams and has played almost every position on each.
In softball, she pitches and usually plays 3rd base; in basketball, she is a wing and a post. Jensen is no stranger to putting in hard work to help her succeed. Both sports require effort and work all year.
“I take hitting lessons in the offseason and go to The Barn. In the summer, my mom and I go to the fields and she hits me grounders. In both, I work on footwork a lot. During the first trimester, I take a sports conditioning basketball class that gets me in shape.” Jensen said. The drive she has to do well makes her push herself to improve every day.
The hard work has paid off, helping Jensen make the varsity softball team as a freshman. She also starting practicing with the varsity basketball team as a sophomore and was able to make the team her junior year. Jensen used to have her sights set on playing college softball. That option is still available for her but she thinks she’ll end up doing other things.
The team and family feelings are very important to most athletes. It’s no different for Jensen.
“My teammates are like sisters to me and I’ve gained great relationships. When I fail they’re always there to pick me up and keep me going,” Jensen said She also loves the bus rides to and from games and ”just jamming out” with her teammates. Jensen is known for the fun and dance moves she brings to the bus rides as well as the encouragement and cheers she brings to the games.
“Maddie is always a party on the bus. There is never a dull moment.” said teammate Marianna Weaver, “she is also good at bringing the hype on the field.”
Not only does she play for the relationships, but she also plays for the feeling she gets when she makes a good play or gets a solid hit. This summer, Jensen hit her first game-winning home run; one of the highlights of her athletic career.
“Whether I make a clutch shot or get a great hit or just make a great play it’s the best feeling in the world,” Jensen said With 3 on her back and Madison on her chest Maddie Jensen is following her dreams and reaching new heights.
