Madison Claims a Victory Over Rigby
The Madison Bobcats earned a win over the Rigby Trojans 56-43 last Wednesday, Jan 30. After a 45-42 loss to Madison on Dec. 21, the Trojans defense came out strong in the first quarter. Madison was able to put up 11 points in the first quarter against Rigby’s 16. Coming into the second quarter, the Bobcats seemed to be running low on energy.
“We had a slow start. In the first half, I thought we kind of settled for shots a little bit,” said Madison Head Coach Travis Schwab.
Madison’s Spencer Hathaway was able to make a solid layup. With 40 seconds left before half-time, he is able to sneak another layup past Rigby defense, helping the Cats put up 8 points in the second quarter. The first half ends with Madison down 29-19.
Schwab was able to get his players energy and motivation back up during half time. “I told them to relax. It’s a ten- point game, we’ve been down ten before,” said Coach Schwab
After half-time the Bobcats came back, ready to redeem themselves. The third quarter opened up with a clean three-point by Carson Downey two minutes into the half. This shot was the turn around point for Madison’s offense.
After a Rigby shot, Hathaway got the rebound, bringing the ball back to Madison’s basket. A hard pass allowed McWhorter to charge through the Trojan’s defense for a smooth layup. A pass from Jaden Schwab got the ball to Hathaway, setting him up for another layup.
The Bobcats were closing the gap; trailing by six with two minutes left in the third quarter. A few clean passes got the ball to McWhorter who was able to drain another three-pointer. Rigby then throws the ball out of bounds allowing Jordan Porter to set a play into action that gets the ball to McWhorter for another layup. With six seconds on the clock Kyle Jackson was able to tip the ball in ending the third quarter, Madison down 37-35.
After a successful third quarter, the Bobcats were ready to close the gap and pull ahead. Downey was able to recover a loose ball by McWhorter 4 minutes in, to tie up the game with a three-pointer. Again, McWhorter was able to sink a three-point shot, giving Madison the lead. Another layup by Downey puts the Cats ahead by 5. With 45 seconds left Jaden Schwab gets a steal, runs the court and get the layup to increase Madisons lead to 9. Then with 20 seconds on the clock, McWhorter makes 2 free throws securing Madison the win.
