The Diamondbacks beat the Bobcats 46-27 Saturday night on December 15th. With the Diamondbacks currently undefeated in the season, and ranked 1st in the state, the Cats were up for a tough game before it started, but they definitely put up a good fight. Both teams’ defense and offense were even throughout the first quarter, but Century really pushed hard for the duration of the game.

Tip-off went in the Diamondback’s favor. They were quick to take advantage of it and scored a layup. The Cats showed just as much aggression, and Kayeli Wasden squeezed through their defense to tie the score. Madison’s defense fell a little in the last half of the quarter, and the Diamondbacks used that to score a few points. In the last minute, we were down 4-9, and Jordyn Day narrowly avoided the defense and scored, bringing us up two points. Our defense was able to block a shot, and with the clock running out, the Bobcats quickly moved to the other side. Madison’s Rachel Hicks shot a three as the buzzer went off, and tied the quarter 9-9.

In the second and third quarters, Century really upped their game. Bobcat defense held out in the second quarter, but it wasn’t quite enough in the third. The Diamondbacks rapidly got their score up at the beginning, nailing a field goal and a three-pointer, but for the rest of the quarter, both teams went back and forth without much action. The Cats took plenty of shots, but all of them seemed to just miss the basket. With 10 seconds to go, Hicks was fouled and made one free throw, bringing the half-time score 16-10 with Century in the lead. The third quarter started similarly to the second, with the Diamondbacks scoring yet again. Century was relentless with their offense and plays, but they were a little too aggressive and fouled Madison a few times. The Cats made three foul shots, one from Hicks and two from Madison Jensen, bringing the third quarter score 27-15.

The final quarter is where both teams’ offense really picked up. Century landed quite a few lucky shots, and we responded with some as well. Jensen drained a three with a great pass from Wasden. With a minute to go, Savannah Dick made a risky pass to Hicks, but it proved to be worth it since she made a three. In the last few seconds of the game, Century was fouled and made both shots, ending the game 46-27 in their favor.

“Our defense was really good,” said Macie Gordon, “but none of our shots seemed to land on the offensive side. They could’ve been executed better.”
