Senior captains at MHS talk about being leaders

by: Sommer Waldron and Brooklyn Niederer

Being a senior team captain can be stressful, intimidating and exciting. From cross-country to volleyball, we all get excited to watch the bobcats tear up either the courts or the field. Being a team captain is a responsibility not to be taken lightly at MHS.

Senior Madi Day, captain of the Varsity Volleyball team knows well what is expected from her teammates and coaches.

“I have to be more careful of my actions because I know my team is looking up to me as a leader. The way I talk and act on and off the court helps me be a better player,” Day said.

From the courts to the field, Soccer captains play an equally important role in representing their teams. Both the girls and boys varsity soccer teams are off to a great start.

“To me a captain is being a leader and bringing the team together, being a role model for them is a huge part of it,” Senior Allison Rigby, one of the captains said.

Senior, Sam Fisher, boys soccer captain said that being a team leader is about setting a good example and that a captain is the first person at practice and the last one to leave.

This year the cross-country team has been setting a new pace.

“Being a captain means to me that you can be looked up to but more importantly, you are there to be a friend to anyone on the team and to inspire.” Senior Brandon Lemon, team captain said.

It’s hard to start something new. The captains are always helping to unite the students on the teams keeping them motivated.

“Being a leader for the underclassmen so they have the same positive experience as you had on the team, that’s what a captain is to me.” Senior Izzy Mair said.

Our school takes pride in the captain’s we pick, keeping the bobcats number one. You see the captains walk out on the field at each Football game for the coin toss. But those captains change for every game. Football captains are picked by their actions, plays and attitude. Check back with us on Friday to see the captains picked for the homecoming game.
