What is R.A.D.?

Rape Aggression Defense, or R.A.D. This self-defense class is taught by certified officers from the Rexburg Police Department and is designed specifically for female students in upper grades at Madison High School.
The R.A.D. program has been around since 1989 and has trained hundreds of thousands of women across the country. At Madison High, the class includes lessons on how to be aware of your surroundings, how to avoid dangerous situations, and what to do if you’re ever threatened. Students learn simple but effective moves that don’t require any special skills or strength. It’s all about using what you have to stay safe.
Junior Lizzy Cardon said “I love the environment the police officers build.”
During the course, students take part in discussions, watch demonstrations, and practice self-defense techniques in a safe and supportive environment.
Many students say the class makes them feel stronger and more prepared. Parents appreciate that their daughters are learning how to take care of themselves. The school and police department hope to keep the program going and even expand it so more students can benefit.
Overall, Madison High’s R.A.D. class is more than just a self-defense course—it’s a way to build confidence, promote safety, and show young women that they have the power to protect themselves.
“I’m more confident than before. It was a lot of fun,” Sophomore Kendall Hargrad said.
