The Madison High School golf team consisted of a total of 10 seniors, 8 boys and 2 girls. Trey Parkinson, Eric Martin, Carter Lerwill, Rigdon Porter, Grant Routson, Daniel Babcock, Tanner Wasden and Tyler Morrill, were the contenders for varsity starting 5. There’s a reason coach Ariel Cherry chose to take that many seniors. All 7 seniors could play better or worse than each other, their scores were too close to not take them all. When Trey Parkinson was asked about the intensity of the battle with Eric Martin to play the 1 spot, he explained the friendship between the two and how it was always a really fun almost brotherly competition, pushing each other to be a better player.

Trey also said “Qualifiers were the most intense, because that’s where you had to play like you were in a tournament to secure your spot.”

During the first part of the season Eric Martin played the 1 spot winning 2 tournaments. Later in the season Trey had his game dialed in and played the 1 the rest of the season, leading the Bobcats into the state tournament, resulting in a team 4th place bringing home Madison’s second 6A hardware, the first also belonging to the golf team with a 1st place at districts a week before.

When Eric Martin was asked about his favorite tournament he mentioned the tournament in Twin Falls at the Canyon Springs Golf Course where the top 4 scores on Madison went 75 (Daniel Babcock) 77 (Eric Martin) 78 (Rigdon Porter) and 79 (Trey Parkinson).

“It just shows actually how close our team is, I love these tournaments when we all come in with 70s,” Eric explained.

Trey Parkinson talked about his gratitude for the entire team.

“This team was pretty special, the bond we had was unlike any other team we played against,” Parkinson said.

Ending the year off with a state trophy and a district championship was the perfect ending for 2024 senior golfers.
