Boys In The Boat has been one of the most loved movies by the average human but has been
receiving heavy criticism from professional movie critics–so is it worth it? When I went to see this movie I
hadn’t read the book. I knew the basics of what happened but I didn’t completely know the story. This
movie tells the story of a man, Joe Rantz, whose mom died and dad left him. He ended up getting
enough money to go to college but due to the great depression, he couldn’t find consistent work. He had
to live in a beaten-down car and was so desperate that he was willing to do anything to earn money.
Eventually, he got a job on the University of Washington JV rowing team. The team eventually got good
enough to become the varsity team and went to Germany to compete for a gold medal in the 1936
Olympics. They ended up winning the gold medal despite their first seat getting sick when they arrived in
Germany. This movie shows what the American dream is supposed to be. The dream is that someone,
despite having nothing, can prove their worth and do great things. Madison High School senior, Sam
Billman said, “It was a very well put together movie that stuck to the plot of the book pretty well and hit
the main points.” Sam also said, “ It’s a solid 9/10, I would absolutely recommend this movie.” Despite
movie critics giving it low ratings, I agree with Sam and think that if you are looking for something to do
then this will not disappoint.
