Fireworks on New Year’s

By Charlie Miller

New Year’s is for some families a cherished time with lots of creative traditions, and for others somewhat uneventful. In Rexburg we have some fun options of ways to celebrate the new year. A couple of students at Madison were asked how they go about celebrating the occasion.

“My family has a few New Year’s traditions. We definitely have more Christmas ones, but New Year’s ones are fun too. I remember we always come together as just a family, or we have over friends and other people, and we just have a snack and tons of food,” Sophomore Lily Moss said.

People consistently tend to have some sort of get together with their extended families, and have celebrations that include things like fancy dinners and treats. Sometimes people have television events that they’ll always watch.

“We always either watch The Ball Drop when we lived in New York, or we watched The Potato Drop this year, which was a strange experience, but it was cool,” Moss said.

There are also some fun city events in Rexburg, such as the conjoined stake dance that happens at the BYUI campus each year, which hundreds of junior high and high school students attended this year. This dance is always a hit and a fun way to kick off the year.

“We always drink sparkling stuff,” Sophomore Isaac Woodward said.

It seems that some families get pretty burnt out after so many Christmas traditions, that they forget or neglect the idea of New Year’s traditions, so not everyone has as easy of a time answering the question.

“This time I did play God of War,” Woodward said.

Whatever it is people do, the start of a new year is a worldwide event that’s interesting to dive in and see what everyone does. And hopefully everyone started it off in a way that helps them feel optimistic to start a fresh new year!

“But I do love the new year,” Woodward said.
