The Varsity Boys Basketball Team has had an exciting year. From the spirited antics of fans, to last-second wins by the team, this year was fantastic.
It started off as we would all expect; multiple wins and a couple losses, as well as some really close games and a couple nail-biters.
Beating Skyline on their home court for the first time in 5 years was a huge early season accomplishment.
Our team continued to win throughout Christmas break and January. However, the real season started in the closing games of the year.
With a couple of huge wins against Highland, Hillcrest, and Skyline, the District Championship was ours for the taking when they entered the tournament as the number one seed.
After a big win against Skyline in the first game of the tournament, the team set up a rematch with the Highland Rams. It was an intense game full of scuffling and short tempers, but the Bobcats prevailed by one point after a free throw by Junior Jaxon Edelmayer.
“It was a ton of pressure.” said Edelmayer.
“Really got my heart racing a ton. But I’m glad I came through.”
The win was overshadowed by a scuffle between our very own Mr. Numa Numa, Tavin Marlor, and Highland’s Ram mascot. Both student sections immediately joined the action. Videos of the fight made national news, and were featured by USA Today, Sports Illustrated, and Fox Sports.
The next big accomplishment for our team was State. Madison boys easily conquered Rocky Mountain, after which we competed in the Semi-final game against Borah, a team that had beaten Madison earlier in the season. That game came down to a nail-biting finish which was topped off by a tip-in by senior Zach Anderson. This play made Sportscenter’s Top 10 as the #1 play of the week, and sent Madison to the State Championship Game.
“It was dream come true.” said Anderson.
“Best feeling in the world.”
In the Championship Game against close rival Highland Rams, our team lost 65-55.
“We just weren’t ready in a lot of ways,” said Senior Curtis Hathaway.
“Everything that could go wrong did go wrong”
Although we didn’t come out with a State Championship, it was a very eventful, unforgettable season. The Bobcats will definitely be back next year, hungry for a ring.
