Spring is in the air. Or maybe it will be. Hopefully soon. Nevertheless, the temperature has been in the mid 50’s so here I am getting excited that summer could possibly be on its way. Let’s hope this weather sticks. (Don’t tell me it’s supposed to snow on Friday. I don’t need that negativity in my life!)

Spring is a time for renewal and refreshening. Naturally, I’ve started refreshing my playlists: adding newly released music, rediscovering old music, and including old favorites. Here are a few of the songs I’ve been listening to lately. They are giving me driving-around-town-with-my-windows-down vibes. (At the end of this list is a link to a Spotify playlist with all these songs and more that I think fit the vibe. Enjoy!)

Secretariat -The Moss

Some of you might know this band from Salt Lake City. They play at The Basement in Rexburg often and are really incredible onstage. If you ever get an opportunity to go to one of their shows, take it! (And take me! I want to see them again!)

This particular song by The Moss is really energizing. Tyke James has a raspy voice that shines in this song’s catchy chorus. After just one listen, you’ll start singing along. I recommend blasting this song in the car with your friends or catching one of The Moss’ shows.

Mythological Beauty -Big Thief

I have been OBSESSED with Big Thief lately. It was hard to choose just one song to feature, but I think you might like this song. “Mythological Beauty” draws you in right from the start with its drum line. The lead vocalist, Adrianne Lenker, has a unique voice and lyrics that catches your attention. “You have a mythological beauty/ you have the eye of someone I’ve seen/ outside of ordinary situations/ even outside of dreams”. Big Thief’s songwriting is captivating and this song is a must listen.

Orange Show Speedway -Lizzy McAlpine

I don’t know what else to say about this song besides it is a BOP. Shout out to Allison Pope for showing it to me. Lizzy McAlpine takes you into her world immediately with her acoustic guitar, honeydew voice, and witty lyrics. This song makes you want to get up and do the white girl living her best life dance.

Don’t Swallow The Cap -The National

Yes this is the kind of music your dad listens to, but give it a chance. I love the sound of The National’s drums. Something about them is so recognizable to me. This song is off my favorite album of theirs “Trouble Will Find Me”. This is another great wind blowing in your face song.

Nobody -Hozier

Hozier is so much more than the “Take Me to Church” singer we know him as. This whole album is a perfectly crafted musical experience beginning to end and this song is one of my favorites. It is just so happy. It is unexpectedly cheerful. Run around in a field, dance in your basement– I don’t know, knock yourself out. You’re welcome.

Those are just five of my favorite spring songs, but more are added to the Spotify playlist linked here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4GZKb9UgGXhG7NxHJXbBoC?si=082RXB5HRW2mQVy-

If you have any suggestions, I am always looking for new music!

Stay tuned,

Hazel Paul
