Key Club is a club at MHS that focuses on doing service projects, their motto being “Service is the Key.” They try and do at least one big service project per trimester. Since January, they have been making beanies for babies.

“I knew how to knit already, but a lot of people didn’t so people were taught how to knit so they could do this project. It’s nice because while you are knitting it doesn’t take too much brain power so you can think about the baby its going to go on. It’s kind of a nice thought,” Senior Sophie Lyman said.

Senior Asia Whoolery’s sister inspired the idea of making the beanies for the babies in the hospital.

“I have a sister that is a nurse and she said that a lot of people that have stillborn babies receive hand-knit hats and it means so much to them. I even talked to a lady that had a stillborn baby and someone knitted them a whole outfit and it was a huge comfort for them,” Whoolery said.

So far, the Key Club has made about 51 beanies and their goal is to make 100. It’s a huge project and it can take about an hour to make each beanie. They are working on this project every Tuesday and Thursday at lunch.

“There have been quite a few of the teachers that have also made some beanies. For example, Miss Ward has made quite a few too. Any student can come and join the service projects,”  Ms. Jacobson said.
